Founded in 1859, the school that would become known as the Northwestern Pritzker School of Law was the first law school established in the city of Chicago. Today, Northwestern Law advances the understanding of law and produces graduates prepared to excel in a rapidly changing world.
Courses
JD Programs
Our primary academic program is the Juris doctor (JD) degree, which includes our joint degree programs: JD-MBA, JD-PhD, JD-LLM in Taxation, and JD-LLM in International Human Rights. We also offer a Two-Year JD program designed for internationally educated attorneys, as well as opportunities for students to transfer or become a visiting student at Northwestern Pritzker Law.
LLM Program
Our LLM (Master of Law) degree programs expand students’ knowledge of law and legal processes and provide opportunities for them to gain expertise in a specialized field of law. To apply, students must have a JD from an ABA-accredited law school or a comparable legal degree from a university outside of the United States.
LLM for International Students
The nine-month general LLM program offers outstanding graduates of foreign law schools an opportunity to study American law and legal processes, continue their studies in international law, and engage in comparative legal research.
LLM in Taxation
The Tax Program’s comprehensive curriculum, outstanding faculty, and small, collaborative community provides students with a solid understanding of the complexities of tax law and the specialized skills needed to practice federal, state, and international tax law successfully. Admission to the Tax Program is available to both the domestic and international law students.
LLM in International Human Rights
The LLM in International Human Rights is designed for students with JDs or law degrees from other countries who wish to undertake an in-depth study of the norms and methods of international human rights law and international criminal law and their implementation by international courts and organizations and in domestic legal systems.
Library
The Law Library maintains a near complete collection in our “ABA Archives” on the third floor of the library (just past Government Documents by the treadmills). When you’re searching in NU Search, you’ll notice these materials have a special call number: B, ABA. The American Bar Association publishes more than 1,000 books, journals, National Institute seminar materials and other substantive works annually, leveraging the expertise of its members as authors and contributors. Practitioners today rely on the ABA’s robust body of knowledge for timely coverage of emerging issues, subject treatises, practical guides, professional skill building, and even wellness advice.
