The Supreme Court of India and High Court of Delhi, organised, Delhi Arbitration Weekend (DAW 2024), the second edition, of the flagship event of the Delhi International Arbitration Centre (DIAC), from March 6-10, 2024, at ‘S’ Block, High Court of Delhi, New Delhi.
The aim behind the event was to build a network of experts, practitioners and academia by engaging them in dialogues and panel discussions, led by eminent legal luminaries, judges and experts in the field of arbitration, from across the globe.
The event focused on recent trends and developments in both Domestic and International Arbitration. It aspired to identify and evaluate the best practices in arbitration that can be integrated into the mainstream.
DAW invited various International Arbitration Institutions and key representatives/ partners of the top International and Indian law firms, specializing in dispute resolution and other experts to contribute towards the resolution of challenges confronting the arbitration community.
Over the course of five days, like-minded individuals came together, exchanging ideas and thoughts over contemporary issues and trends in the realms of domestic and International arbitration.
Helmed by the experts in their respective fields, DAW 2024, comprised of focused sessions, curated to serve the need for discussion on the most pertinent themes in arbitration today, such as biases in arbitration, joinder of non-signatories in arbitration, Investor State Dispute Settlement (ISDS) mechanism in light of today’s economic challenges, interplay of technology and arbitration, among others.
The topic in the Inaugural Session was:
“Understanding the Unsaid: Biases in Arbitration and the Role of Tribunals and Courts.” In his welcome address Justice Manmohan, Acting Chief Justice, High Court of Delhi, said, “This conference is an endeavour to leave a footprint on the Indian subcontinent. DAW is a flagship conference of DIAC. The centre has constantly been evolving as a trusted arbitration center in the country. It has carved a niche for itself by providing a trusted space for dispute resolution.”
Dr. Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, Chief Justice of India, (CJI) said, “DAW has outdone itself year after year. This event is truly one in itself. The association of the Supreme Court with this event, which is curated by Delhi High Court judges, stands behind the legitimacy and credibility of arbitration.”
The CJI further said, ” The onus to tackle biases of all forms cannot lie on Courts or national legislatures, a huge share of the responsibility shall be borne by the arbitration community.” The CJI also released the Delhi Arbitration Review, the journal of DIAC published by Eastern Book Company.
