Jamuns (Syzygium cumini) are shiny crimson black when ripe and has a seed in the centre. The fruit has a sweetish, mildly astringent taste. Jamun is a healthy fruit with absolutely no trace of sucrose. Jamun is a rich source of vitamin A and vitamin C. The fruit also has blood purifying properties. Daily intake of jamun fruit or jamun extract offers a natural and safe way to prevent the onset of diabetes. Also, oral administration of jamun extract boosts insulin levels in people affected by diabetes. It is therefore, the only fruit with minimum calories and is one of the best medicines for treatment of diabetes. It is also helpful in skin related ailments, an effective remedy for indigestion, soothing stomach cramps and dispersing gas. The jambul fruit is an effective food remedy for bleeding piles. The fruit should be taken with salt every morning for two or three months in its season. The use of the fruit in this manner in every season will effect radical cure and save the user from bleeding piles for entire life. Fresh jambul fruit taken with honey is also an effective medicine for bleeding piles. Natural acids in the jambul fruit play an important role in the secretion of digestive enzymes and stimulate the liver functions. The whole tree of jamun is known for its medicinal properties. It is therefore used very extensively in traditional methods of medicine like Ayurveda and Unani.
