BOOK REVIEWS
The Art of a Lawyer
By Chief Justice Dr. B. Malik                         Rs. 1095
Published by: Universal Law Publishing Co. Pvt. Ltd., New Delhi - India

We welcome the Tenth Edition of Justice Dr. B. Malik (The Art of a Lawyer) which also incorporates cross-examination, advocacy and Courtmanship.

This present work is a collection of articles from various eminent Judges, Professionals and Professors. The learned author was at pain to approach lawyers in the country and abroad and collected their views on the aspect of Lawyers' work. A young lawyer has very little chance of getting proper training for his profession before he joins it. The traditions of the Bar, what is expected of him, what he should do and what he should not do and how he is to conduct himself are matters that he has to learn for himself by experience. In some of the articles included in this book there is a lament that those methods he could copy are getting rare. The articles contain very valuable information and points arise in the life of every lawyer when he has doubts how he should act.

The learned author has divided the book into two parts. Part I deals with Advocacy and Part II deals with cross-examination. Parts have further been divided into 87 chapters dealing with some observations on the Art of Advocacy. How to win your case, The honest lawyer, The profession of law, The five functions of the lawyer, The just judge, The closing speech, Forensic Persuasion, The writing of judgments, The duty of a lawyer, Illustrative cases, Humour in law, Some suggestions to junior lawyers, The qualities of a judge, Essentials of a lawyer, The moving of writ petitions, The art of presentation of a case in court etc. There are some illustrative articles by various illustrious legal luminaries. The book is full of knowledge for all lawyers. We are sure that all lawyers, young or old, would find this book very valuable and useful. The get up of the book is excellent.
