President of India on Emergency (1975-1977)
By Janak Raj Jai

Price: Rs. 395

“The author is pained and rightly that a recent book on Emergency by a very high up politician should have tried to throw doubt on the integrity of Justice J.C. Shah, one of the most respected judges of the Supreme Court of India. '

The most revealing and informative part of the book is his painstaking labour in highlighting the finding of Shah Commission which has given the damning findings of the illegal, and gross misuse of authority by the then Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi, some of her Central Ministers and officials, about the illegal, nefarious acts to the prejudice of political rivals of Indira Gandhi. This chapter alone makes the book such a storehouse of authentic information because Shah Commission report was kept in the locked closet during Congress rule and even now it is not so freely available.

The author also points out the sad state of what he calls the spineless judges and how they were merely executing the orders and instructions of the executive.

Dr. Janak Raj has very openly mentioned the deprivations and stresses of detenues including his own. This brings out the human angle which was sought to be destroyed by the excesses of Emergency. A wealth of facts still unknown in the public have been very painstakingly brought out by Dr. Janak Raj.

I compliment Dr. Janak Raj for his labour and in-depth study in giving such a detailed authentic information about the Emergency period.” Justice Rajindar Sachar, Chief Justice (Retd.), High court of Delhi.
