Adho Mukha Svanasana

In Sanskrit, "Adho" means downward, "mukh" means face and "svan" means dog. In this asana, the practitioner's face is downwards, hence the name.

Benefits:

  • Used to overcome stress and depression;
  • Improves the digestive system;
  • Beneficial for patients of high blood pressure, asthma, sciatica and sinusitis;
  • Shoulders, legs, spine and whole body get stretched;
  • Relieves fatigue and rejuvenates the body.

Procedure: Lie on the floor on your abdomen. Raise your body to position the body on all fours, palms, knees and toes touching the floor. Keep your knees apart and right beneath the hips and the palms a bit ahead of the shoulders. Spread out your fingers. Exhale and raise your knees off the ground. Keep your knees slightly bent and your heels off the ground.

Raise your body up further, lengthening your tail bone. Lift your buttocks further up so they face towards the ceiling. Lengthen your thighs and stretch the heels so that they touch the ground. Keep your knees straight but still apart. Roll the upper thighs inward slightly and roll the heels outward slightly. Press your palms on the floor and straighten your arms from the wrists to the top of the shoulders. Open up your shoulders and move them towards the tailbone. Keep your head in between the two arms. Hold the pose for about a minute. Gradually raise it to three minutes. Return to initial position in reverse order.

Sweet Potatoes

The Sweet Potato ( Ipomoea batatas ) is large, starchy, sweet-tasting, tuberous root vegetable . Sweet potatoes are an excellent source of vitamin A and a good source of potassium and vitamin C, B6, riboflavin, copper, pantothetic acid and folic acid. It is rich in vitamin A (betacarotene) and vitamin C. Both Vitamins A and C are powerful antioxidants that work in the body to remove free radicals. Sweet potato is good for stomach ulcers and inflamed conditions of the colon. It is beneficial for low blood pressure. It is a good food for people involved in heavy muscular work, since this food is high in vitamins and minerals. Sweet potato may help prevent cancer in glands and organs with epithelial tissue due to its high vitamin A content. It is good for diabetics, because it helps stabilize blood sugar levels.

Recipe of the Month 

Sweet Potato Pancakes

Ingredients:

  • 1½ cups sifted all-purpose flour
  • 3½ teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1¼ cups mashed cooked sweet potatoes
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1½ cups milk
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted

Procedure: Sift dry ingredients into a mixing bowl. Combine remaining ingredients; add to flour mixture, stirring just until dry ingredients are moistened. Drop by tablespoon onto hot greased griddle or skillet and fry, turning once, until browned on both sides.

Pushkar

Pushkar is a town in the State of Rajasthan in India . It is situated at 14 km North West from Ajmer and is one of the five sacred dhams (pilgrimage sites for devout Hindus.) Pushkar is famous for its scenic beauty and more than 400 temples. Pushkar has a number of exciting tourist attractions including the famous Pushkar Lake and Brahma Temple . The annual Pushkar Fair held every year in October-November is another major attraction for tourists. Pushkar Lake, is a beautiful semi-circular lake with 52 lovely ghats surrounding it. According to beliefs, a dip in the Pushkar Lake on the auspicious occasion of Karthik Poornima brings salvation to devotees. Brahma Temple is the only temple dedicated to Lord Brahma. The beautiful marble temple is famous for its four-headed idol of Lord Brahma. It is decorated with silver coins and a silver turtle on its black and white chequered floor. Savitri Temple, dedicated to Goddess Savitri, the first wife of Lord Brahma, is the second most important temple in Pushkar. Located just behind the Brahma Temple on a hilltop, it provides a panoramic view of the scenic Pushkar Lake and exotic sand dunes.

Rangji or Rangnath Temple is known for its gracious South Indian style of architecture. The temple houses a huge image of Lord Vishnu. It has a high rising 'Gopuram' (large gate) and Garuda pillars studded with a mythical bird styled in gold. Varah Temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It has an image of Vishnu in the incarnation of wild boar. Apteshwar Temple , a 12th century temple, is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Pushkar offers an exciting range of activities to its visitors. One can enjoy excursions to Kuchaman famous for its fort and palaces, Kisangarh famous for Kisangarh Art, Ajmer famous for Dargah of Sufi Saint Khwaja Nizamuddin Auliya, and Sambhar Lake . One can simply sit on the bank of the Pushkar Lake and enjoy the beautiful vistas. Don't forget to take stroll down the Pushkar Lake in the evening. As the sun sets, the lake changes colour and offers a wonderful sight. On tours to Pushkar, one can also shop for exquisite souvenirs, ethnic jewellery, brassware, embroidered textiles, miniature paintings, leather goods, mesmerizing puppets and pottery. During Pushkar Fair, one can shop for unique items like beads, lovely colourful bangles, leather goods, camel cover, and much more. Visit Pushkar during the festival to experience the original charm of the town. An exciting camel safari is another exciting activity that one can enjoy on the Pushkar tour.
