The West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences was established under the WBNUJS Act, 1999 (West Bengal Act IX of 1999) adopted by the West Bengal Legislature in July, 1999. The Chief Justice of India is the Chancellor of NUJS and is also the Chairman of the General Council, the supreme policy-making body of the University. Professor Dr. P. Ishwara Bhat is the Vice Chancellor of the University. NUJS faculty has been trained in top universities in India and abroad and has been constantly involved in delivering quality teaching and research. The faculty members of NUJS have made a name for themselves, in their respective fields, by publishing research in reputed journals in India and abroad and with renowned publishing houses and are playing a key role in pushing the frontiers of legal knowledge and expertise. NUJS has also attracted leading academicians, as visiting faculties, from top universities such as University of Sydney, University of London, National University of Singapore, Freiburg University and others.
B.A. / B.Sc. with LL.B.
Admission to 5-Year B.A. / B.Sc. with LL.B. Degree Programme is made strictly on merit, based on a Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) at different centres across the country. To be eligible for admission, a candidate should have passed the 10 + 2 or equivalent examination with not less than 50% marks in the aggregate (45% in case of reserved categories, i.e ., SC / ST/ Persons with Disability) and should not be more than 20 years of age as on July 1 of the year of examination (22 years in case of SC / ST / Persons with Disability).
To be eligible for appearing in CLAT a candidate should have obtained a LL.B./B.L. Degree or an equivalent degree from a recognised University with not less than 55% marks in aggregate (50% in case of SC/ST /OBC and persons with Disability).
An applicant seeking admission to M.Phil. Degree programme shall have an LL.M. Degree either from NUJS or from any other recognized University, with not less than 50% marks in aggregate or its equivalent.
An applicant seeking admission to Ph.D. Degree programme must have an M.Phil./LL.M. Degree in law either from WBNUJS or any other recognized University, with not less than 55% marks in LL.M. or its equivalent.
The University Central Library occupies a central location commanding a spectacular view of the quadrangle and hostels. The reading room is spread over 758 square metres of floorspace, providing 400 seats. The Library has a collection of over 14000 titles and more than 5000 volumes of bound periodicals as well a sizeable collection of electronic materials in CD-ROMs and legal databases providing online access via major legal platforms including SCC, Grand Jurix, Heinonline, Westlaw, Lexis Nexis, and Manupatra online. In addition to the central library, there are specialized collections held at the various schools and centres of studies open to access by students.
NUJS campus is located in the Salt Lake city of Kolkata overlooking the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass. The NUJS campus is spread over an area of five acres of land comprising of an academic block, the halls of residence and a few flats for the faculties. The campus also has a guest house and a gymnasium for the students and the staff and faculties of NUJS. NUJS has built its own auditorium, on campus, with all modern facilities. The academic block of the campus has the NUJS library; two fully air conditioned conference rooms; two huge lecture theatres; offices of the Vice Chancellor and the Registrar; offices of the faculty members and staff; LL.B. and LL.M. classrooms; and a canteen. NUJS students have access to computer and internet services in the library along with photocopying and printing services.
