Army Institute of Law, Mohali

The Army Institute of Law (AIL) was established in July 1999 under the aegis of Army Welfare Education Society (AWES). The Institute is running 5-year degree course in law after 10+2, primarily for the wards of serving and ex-servicemen of Army. However, 20 per cent seats are available for the civilians also. Out of this 15 per cent are reserved for Punjab Residents and 5 per cent for All India Civil Category. The Army Institute of Law is affiliated to Punjabi University, Patiala and approved by the Bar Council of India.

The Objectives

  • To be a centre of excellence in field of legal education by adopting modern teaching and training techniques.
  • To impart high quality legal education and to develop overall personality of the student in a disciplined environment.
  • To make its Law Graduates capable of pursuing a career at Bar, competing for Judicial Services, Civil Services, Defence Services and placements in Multi-national Corporations.
  • To imbibe high sense of social and moral values among students.
  • To develop and promote national integration.
  • To encourage participation in sports and co-curricular activities.


Programme : LL.B. (H)

Duration : Five years

Eligibility Qualification : 10+2 with 45% marks in aggregate of all Subjects

Mode of Selection : Combined Entrance Test and Group Discussion Interview

Seats : 80


AIL provides additional facilities in the form of:

  • Hostel
    Being a residential institute, it offers home in the form of furnished hostels. The institute has two hostels for girls and boys separately.
  • M I Room
    Health is one of the most important criteria when it comes to staying away from home and the staff of Army Institute of Law understands that. There is a fully operational MI Room, which is supervised by a certified and well-trained nursing assistant who is either an ex-serviceman or serving AMC personnel.
  • Computer Lab
    The base for an apt development of an aspirant lawyer's mind is by regular and comprehensive access to information, the computer lab does just the same by making it simpler for the students to broaden their horizons.


Library is the heart of any academic institution. The Army Institute of Law provides students with extensive Library facilities to maximize their knowledge in the field of law. The students are taught from the very first semester, the importance of reading, comprehending and retaining important material through research, extra library hours and project presentations. Through the extensive and exhaustive library, the potential lawyers of tomorrow are made to imbibe the value and habit of concentrated and tireless reading. The students are also made to understand various basic legal issues through the most recent journals, reporters, research papers, etc. The e-Library section has CD-ROMs and Subscribed law sites through leased line Internet connectivity. The e-library includes Legal research, Manupatra, Supreme Court Cases online, various CD ROMs covering various Bare Acts and Legal topics, etc.


The objectives of the University are motivated by the goal of producing socially responsible lawyers. Social responsibility cannot be taught, it has to be learned. The University hence devises programmes that will bridge the gap between classroom and social reality. The Placement programme of the University is one such effort.

  • Placement Cell
    The placement cell arranges the in-course placement with law firms, lawyers, Judges, NGOs and corporate houses, according to students' choice and their field of interest. The students of AIL have had experience working as Judge clerks in the Delhi High Court which is a unique privilege for any law school student.

  • Public Relations Cell
    The team of the PR is headed by an experienced faculty along with a group of dedicated students who strive in all possible manners to take the Institute to higher pedestals. The Cell has many successful Moot Courts, guest lectures, seminars, workshops and ceremonies to its credit. It has been a driving force behind the management and organizing of various functions. It has been providing extensive press coverage to all the important functions that are held in the Institute premises.

  • Human Rights Cell
    The Human Rights Cell of the Army Institute of Law has, since its inception, striven to accomplish the magnanimous task of enlightening the students and the society about the rights and the fundamentals that they have and should fight for by the virtue of being humans. The members of the human rights cell bring to the fore issues and subjects that every person talks about and yet does not understand.
