Jamia Millia Islamia, an institution originally established at Aligarh in United Provinces, India in 1920 became a Central University by an Act of the Indian Parliament in 1988. In Urdu language, Jamia means 'University', and Millia means 'National'. The University is open to all persons irrespective of caste, colour and creed.
The Faculty of Law, Jamia Millia Islamia was established in 1989. Being the youngest of the Faculties of Jamia, over the last decade it has passed through various stages of development while having made significant progress towards becoming a notable centre for legal learning in the capital.
At the initial stage, a three-year LL.B. course was introduced. But now the Faculty has introduced a five year integrated B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) programme, replacing the three year LL.B. course; a two year (four semesters) Post Graduate Programme (LL.M.) in three specialized streams of Personal Laws, Corporate Laws, and Criminal Laws and a Ph.D. Programme .
The B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) Programme while integrating Law Studies with Social Sciences like Economics, Sociology, History and Political Science, provides adequate space for a meaningful dialogue on the new and emerging areas of legal discourse and the imperatives of social change in a globalizing world. Opportunities to learn Computer skills and languages (including foreign languages) are in-built into the Programme. Besides, the five year Programme lays special emphasis on developing professional skills like advocacy, negotiations, pleadings and conveyancing, alternative dispute-settlements and counseling through a carefully designed clinical programme. To further streamline and give a focused attention to building of professional skills, the Faculty has a Legal Services Clinic in order to cater to the students' future career prospects and ensure their early placements. The Faculty also has an internship and placement programme.
The Law Library has a collection of over 6000 documents, including textbooks, reference materials, practitioner works, law reports, etc. The Library supports the specific needs of the law students and research scholars and faculty. Members can borrow material from Central Library also. They are provided separate membership cards of the Faculty Library and Central Library.
The Faculty of Law has adopted several innovative techniques including Lectures and Seminars with the help of the Overhead Projector, Case-Study methods, presentation of assignments and Moot Courts with emphasis on Clinical Legal Education.
The Faculty is aiming at an overall development of the personality of the students by giving adequate attention to co-curricular and extra-curricular activities through the Jamia Law Students Association with particular emphasis on Moot Courts, Debates and Extension Lectures involving crucial and controversial legal issues.
