The Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Patiala (RGNUL), was established in the year 2006 by the Punjab Government under Punjab Act No. 12 of 2006 as a public university. The RGNUL, Punjab is at present located at its interim location, Mohindra Kothi, The Mall, Patiala. Soon it will have its permanent campus. Within a short span, the University has established a well-resourced Library in the Campus. The RGNUL, Patiala is a fitting testament to Revered Late Rajiv Gandhi who regarded education as an important tool to bring about social change. The School has opened a window of opportunity to the young legal aspirants beyond the State boundaries and at the National and International Levels.
The Mission of the School is to serve the society through reforms in legal services by way of preparing professionally competent lawyers, inquisitive
researchers, able administrators, conscientious judicial officers and above all socially responsible citizens who shall be whole— heartedly and continuously engaged in the process of nation building.
The School offers both undergraduate and post graduate law degrees.

The University has developed the entire course curriculum keeping in view the various developments taking place in the legal world. While drafting the course curriculum for the undergraduate classes, the emphasis has been to provide comprehensive instructions to the students. An applicant seeking admission to Ph.D. Degree programme must have obtained a Masters Degree in Law from any recognized University with not less than 55% Marks or its equivalent in grade.
Centres of Excellence
From the era of ‘Industrial Capitalism’, breathing in the age of Globalization, Liberalization and Information Technology and visualizing the changeover of ‘Society’ to ‘Knowledge Groups’, the ‘Law’ as a subject has transformed to specializations and excellence in ‘Law’ . Rubric to it, RGNUL has established a number of Centres of Excellence over these subjects of Law offering the base for strategic Legal Education and research oriented activities, each independent in its concept, objective and operation over the subject in general and for students in particular.
Centre for Advanced Studies in Criminal Law (CASCL) The core comprehensive objective of CASCL is conducting intensive research on subjects covering Criminology, Penology, Victimology and the issues of Criminal Justice System and the issues of administration of Criminal Justice System and offering for declivity of the increasing sensitivity in crime.
