The West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences was established under the WBNUJS Act, 1999 (West Bengal Act IX of 1999) adopted by the West Bengal Legislature in July, 1999. The Chief Justice of India is the Chancellor of NUJS and is also the Chairman of the General Council, the supreme policy-making body of the University. Professor Dr. P. Ishwara Bhat is the Vice Chancellor of the University.
The faculty members of NUJS have educational qualifications from leading international and national universities including Columbia University, Oxford University, Vanderbilt University, London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) - University of London, School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) - University of London, University of Nottingham, University of Essex, Jawaharlal Nehru University, University of Delhi, National Law School of India University, NALSAR University of Law, National University of Juridical Sciences, University of Calcutta, Banaras Hindu University, Jadavpur University, University of Mysore and others. NUJS faculties have also been awarded prestigious scholarships and fellowships such as Rhodes, Fulbright, Commonwealth, Chevening and Felix to name a few.
B.A. / B.Sc. with LL.B.
Admission to 5-Year B.A. / B.Sc. with LL.B. Degree Programme is made strictly on merit, based on a Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) at different centres across the country.
Master of Law (LL.M.)
University offers full-time LL.M. Degree with specialization in Commercial Law and International Law. The candidate must have completed a bachelor's degree in Law (LL.B.) with a percentage of at least 55 or an equivalent cumulative grade point average from any Indian University recognised by UGC or any equivalent degree offered by a foreign University.
Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.)
The candidate shall have Masters Degree of any recognized University, with a minimum of 55% marks or equivalent Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA). However, this condition is relaxed to 50% in case of candidates belonging to SC and ST. Entrance Test: Admission to M.Phil. shall be through an Entrance Test and Interview. Applications for Entrance Test shall be invited once a year in the month of July, depending on the vacancies existing in each specialized area.
The Library occupies a central location measuring 900 sq.m. and provides seating for approximately 300 users. The open access system followed in the library allows unlimited access not only to the students, but also to research scholars from different parts of the country. The library collection has over 16500 titles exclusive of titles donated by renowned personalities and organizations and e-books. The library subscribes to approximately 124 journals, including foreign publications, which cover a wide range of legal as well as other related subjects. It has in its archives the complete sets of Antitrust Law Journal, Harvard Law Review, Yale Law Journal, Fleet Street Report, Public Law and the Yearbook of Commercial Arbitration to name a few. Adequate provision is made for general reading, newspapers and magazines.
NUJS campus is located in the Salt Lake city of Kolkata overlooking the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass. The NUJS campus is spread over an area of five acres of land comprising of an academic block, the halls of residence and a few flats for the faculties. The campus also has a guest house and a gymnasium for the students and the staff and faculties of NUJS. NUJS has built its own auditorium on campus, with all modern facilities. The academic block of the campus has the NUJS library; two fully air conditioned conference rooms; two huge lecture theatres; offices of the Vice Chancellor and the Registrar; offices of the faculty members and staff; LL.B. and LL.M. classrooms; and a canteen. NUJS students have access to computer and internet services in the library along with photocopying and printing services.
