Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law (RGNUL) is a National Law University located in Patiala, Punjab. It was established in 2006 by the Punjab Government (Punjab Act No. 12 of 2006) as a public university dedicated to the field of Legal Education. RGNUL is affiliated to UGC and approved by the Bar Council of India. The proactive curriculum of the law school has gained appreciation from the legal fraternity. The signature law journal of the law school 'RGNUL Law Review' has been launched to promote cutting edge legal research. The students have publications in international and national legal journals. RGNUL currently stands as the 7 th best law school in the country and the 5 th best national law school of India. RGNUL focuses on all round development of students as human beings; perhaps that is the reason many students from this institute take litigation as a career. Also, it has been consistently ranked amongst the top since the inception of the Mooting Premier League.
The School offers both undergraduate and post graduate law degrees.
B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) Five-Year Integrated Programme
RGNUL offers B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) Five-Year Integrated Programme whereunder Social Sciences subjects like Economics, English, History, Political Science and Sociology are taught as major and minor subjects along with law subjects in the first two years of study. The Admission shall be based exclusively on the merit in the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT). However, to qualify for admission: The candidate must have passed 10+2 examination of the Punjab School Education Board or its equivalent with minimum 50% marks in the aggregate (45% marks for SC/ST and Persons with disability).
The RGNUL offers two-year LL.M. Post Graduation Course with specialization in Business Law, Constitutional Law, Criminal Law and International Law. The Admission shall be based exclusively on the merit of the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT). The candidate must have passed the LL.B./B.L. Degree examination from Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law or any other University whose degrees are recognized by this University, with minimum 55% marks (50% marks for SC/ST and Person with disability).
An applicant seeking registration to the Ph.D. Degree Programme must have:
(i) A Degree of Master of Laws (LL.M.) from any recognized university with a minimum of 55% marks; or
(ii) M.Phil. Degree in Law with B+ grade or its equivalent.
Admission to the Ph.D. Programme shall be through an Entrance Test to be conducted by the University every year on the First Sunday in the Month of May.
The Library at the RGNUL has acquired a collection of over 22,000 volumes covering a wide range of general and special subjects consisting of text books, reference books, bound volumes of journals, reports, e-books, thesis etc. apart from the current legal periodicals. The RGNUL Library at present subscribes 80 Law Journals and about 25 magazines. Apart from the subscription to law journals, 19 Newspapers and Online journals (Manupatra, Westlaw India, SCC Online, LII of India, EPW, DELNET and Hein Online etc. ) are also being subscribed by the RGNUL Library for keeping the students and faculty in touch with the current affairs. Apart from these two, separate reading rooms have been marked for the undergraduate students and for the Post-graduate students.
Centres of Excellence
From the era of 'Industrial Capitalism', breathing in the age of Globalization, Liberalization and Information Technology and visualizing the changeover of 'Society' to 'Knowledge Groups', the 'Law' as a subject has transformed to specializations and excellence in 'Law' . Rubric to it, RGNUL has established a number of Centres of Excellence over these subjects of Law offering the base for strategic Legal Education and research oriented activities, each independent in its concept, objective and operation over the subject in general and for students in particular.
Centre for Advanced Studies in Criminal Law (CASCL)
The core comprehensive objective of CASCL is conducting intensive research on subjects covering Criminology, Penology, Victimology and the issues of Criminal Justice System and the issues of administration of Criminal Justice System and offering for declivity of the increasing sensitivity in crime.
RGNUL at Action
A significant demonstration of academics at RGNUL is evident from active participation of its students in various national and international seminars and conferences and moot court competitions held in various parts of the country.
The RGNUL is presently located in Patiala, a historical city of the State of Punjab. It is located in the heart of the city at a Heritage Building, The Mohindra Kothi, and spread over an area of more than five acres. The campus holds Academic and Administrative Blocs, Centres of Excellence, Classrooms, Seminar Hall, Library, Gymnasium and well operative Canteen. The shaded campus with beautiful old trees, huge grassy areas and green environment invite students to congregate, study and research. With the extensive renovation and sprucing up it provides congenial academic environment to young Lawyer Leaders of the World.
