Stanford Law School, Stanford, CA

Stanford began offering a curriculum in legal studies in 1893, when the university engaged its first two law professors. One was Benjamin Harrison, former President of the United States, who delivered a landmark series of the Constitution. The other was Nathan Abbott, who served as head of the nascent law program.

At Stanford Law School, the faculty and students, influential alumni, dedicated staff are united in its belief that a Stanford Law degree is a powerful tool for change. The School's programs -intensive curriculum, hands-on legal clinics, high-profile academic centers - cultivate professional skills and values, inspire new ideas, and engage leaders in developing solutions. And its resources - from cutting-edge facilities to the diverse advantages of Stanford University - make the Stanford Law campus an ideal environment for exploring and mastering the law.

Excellence, innovation, and a commitment to the future - these are Stanford Law School's legacy to each new generation of law students and lawyers.

Stanford Law School is a place for the ambitious, those intrigued by big questions and the opportunity to explore answers with thought leaders and innovators whose ideas have real impact.

JD Program

Stanford Law School offers an intensive, dynamic JD program in an environment that is collegial and interdisciplinary, and part of one of the world's leading research universities.

Joint Degree Programs

Interdisciplinary education is a hallmark of Stanford University and a distinct strength of Stanford Law, where students can explore the many ways law intersects with other fields.

Advanced Degree Programs

Stanford Law School offers four one-year master's degree programs and a doctoral degree (JSD) for international graduate students who have earned a law degree outside the United States.

Scholarship and Research

Through their scholarship and research, Stanford Law faculty explore traditional and emerging legal frontiers. Much of their work takes place in academic programs and centers that engage students in faculty research and attract thought, industry, and policy leaders from around the world.

The Law Library at Stanford holds 5,00,000 books, 3,60,000 microform and audio-visual items, and more than 8000 current serial subscriptions.

Students run about thirty student organizations and publish seven legal journals. The most influential journal is the Stanford Law Review.

The academic program is flexible and includes a diverse array of courses and clinics. At first years, students take courses in criminal law, civil procedure, constitutional law, contracts, torts, property, and legal research and writing. Upper level courses range from business law to international law and include a growing clinical program. The Supreme Court clinic is the only one of its kind at a law school in the United States and has successfully brought over twenty cases before the court, making it one of the most active Supreme Court practices of any kind. Because of its proximity to other top academic programs on campus, there has been a growing focus on joint degree programs and classes with other professional schools, such as business, medicine and education.

Clinical Education

Stanford Law School pioneered clinical education in 1970s. Today, they continue that tradition of innovation through nine legal clinics that, under the guidance of faculty mentors, test and sharpen students' lawyering skills, expand their prespectives and cultivate the values that make for effective, ethical attorneys.
