Justice Altamas Kabir, the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court was recently appointed as the 39 th Chief Justice of India. The 64-year-old judge assumed his new charge on September 29, 2012 after incumbent Chief Justice S.H. Kapadia and would remain at the helm of Indian Judiciary till July 19, 2013.
Born on July 19, 1948, Justice Kabir is an M.A., LL.B. from University of Calcutta. Became an advocate in 1973 and practiced civil and criminal law in Culcutta at the district court and the Calcutta High Court. Became a permanent judge in the Calcutta High Court on August 6, 1990. Was appointed as the Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court on March 1, 2005 and became a judge of the Supreme Court of India on September 9, 2005.
Computerisation of High Court, Civil Courts and other Courts of Calcutta happened under the guidance of Justice Kabir. On 14 th January, 2010, he was appointed as the Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority. He has rendered several landmark judgments, particularly on Human Rights and Election Laws.
