WHATS HAPPENING

PERSONS IN NEWS  

Abdul Hamid was sworn in as 17th Bangladesh President replacing Zillur Rahman, who died last month.  

 

 

Siddaramaiah was sworn in as the 22nd Chief Minister of the State of Karnataka.  

 

Takehiko Nakao , Japan's former Vice Finance Minister, was elected President of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) by its Board of Governors, ahead of the bank's annual meet in New Delhi.

Anil Goswami , a senior IAS officer from J&K cadre, has been appointed as the new Home Secretary and will have two-year tenure. 

 

Roberto Azevedo from Brazil was named as the head of the World Trade Organisation. He will take charge of his office from Pascal Lamy of France in the Geneva-based Body in September 2013. 

 

Najib Razak was sworn in as the Prime Minister of Malaysia for a second term by Malaysia's king Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah.

Staffan de Mistura the Deputy Foreign Minister of Italy was appointed as the Special Envoy to India on Marines Issue. 

 

Sanaullah Ranjay , the Pakistani prisoner who was attacked by a jail inmate in Kot Bhalwal jail in Jammu died due to multi-organ failure at the PGI Hospital in Chandigarh on 9 th May, 2013.

PLACES IN NEWS

Daulat Beg Oldi is located in Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir. It lies at the easternmost point of the Karakoram Range in a cold desert region, just 8 km south of the Chinese border and 9 km northwest of the Aksai Chin Line of Actual Control between China and India. It is a historic camp site and current military base located on an ancient trade route connecting Ladakh to Yarkand in Xinjiang, China. The Chip Chap River flows by Daulat Beg Oldi from east to west.       

The United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is set to categorize Japanese volcano of Mount Fuji as a World Heritage site.

AWARDS IN NEWS

Ethiopian Journalist Reeyot Alemu was honoured with  2013 UNESCO-Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize for her "exceptional workings  on the root causes of poverty, and gender equality."

Aparajita Datta , a wildlife biologist has won Whitley Award for a project to conserve "Hornbill" bird in Arunachal Pradesh State. Whitley Awards - known as 'Green Oscars' are organized by 'Whitley Fund for Nature 'to recognize the conservators for their outstanding study in the field of conserving the nature, forest and environment.

Dadasaheb Phalke Award for life time achievement was presented to Pran Kishan Sikand, popularly known as Pran at his residence in Mumbai. The veteran actor was presented the coveted award, comprising of a Swarn Kamal, Citation, Shawl and a cash prize of 10 lakhs rupees.

This year's ISRO Young Scientist Award was given to Jenita Mary Nongkynrih,   a young woman scientist from Meghalaya for her Urban Information system project in the North East.

 

The President of India, Pranab Mukherjee honoured legendary storyteller and prolific novelist Indira Goswami with the Asom Ratna Award for the year 2012 posthumously.

Britain has launched super priority same-day visa service for urgent travellers from India.

The Nitaqat  is a new policy being placed by the Saudi government in order to reduce the unemployment rate among Saudi citizens.This policy makes it mandatory for Saudi Companies to reserve 10 percent of jobs for Saudi nationals.

The Union Government of India approved a National Cyber Security Policy with the objective to create a secured computing atmosphere across the country.

Market regulator SEBI has given a fillip to the country's first telecom incubator 'Startup Village' in Kerala by approving the Startup Village angel fund of $10 million that could go up to $20 million with a 'Green Shoe' (over-allotment) option.

The Geographical Indication Registry (GIR) has accorded the Geographical Indication (GI) registration to the Lucknow Zardozi - the world renowned textile embroidery. 

Water Conservation Year 2013 was approved by the Union Cabinet of India on 9 th May, 2013. A number of mass awareness activities will be undertaken with emphasis on sensitizing the masses on water related issues, encouraging them to conserve and use it judiciously.           

Harvard University researchers have successfully taken first flight of bee sized robot named as ' RoboBee' - which is less than tenth of gram in weight.
