Born on 10.03.1949. Post Graduated in Arts from University of Bombay and passed LL.B. from Government Law College, Bombay. Practised in Civil, Constitution, Labour and Service Laws and specialised in Industrial and Service matters. Participated in various legal seminars from time to time. Was the main speaker in the Justice Gajendragadkar Centenary Celebrations at I.L.S. Law College, Pune in 1981. Presented an address at the Orissa Tax Lawyers Seminar at Puri in September, 2002. Participated in the Workshops on "Social Justice" at Durban and Cape Town Universities in South Africa as a part of delegation of Judges led by the Hon'ble Chief Justice of India in June, 2008. Worked as an Assistant Government Pleader to the State of Maharashtra in the Bombay High Court on the Original and Appellate side during 1984-1989. Worked as part time Professor of Law at the Government Law College, Bombay from 1977-1984. Appointed as an Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court on 20.01.1994. Transferred to the Gujarat High Court on 04.02.1994. Appointed as Permanent Judge of the Bombay High Court on 23.01.1995. Re-transferred to the Bombay High Court on 25.02.1999. Was Acting Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court from 12.01.2007. Took oath as Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court on 07.03.2007. Functioned as the Chief Justice of Madras High Court from 09.03.2009. Assumed the charge of the office of Judge, Supreme Court of India on 30.04.2010.
Appointed as a Member of the Fact Finding Committee constituted by the Supreme Court of India in the year 1991 in the matter of Bandhua Mukti Morcha to examine the actual plight of the child bonded labourers.
Prior to her appointment as a Judge, was actively associated with the activities of the lawyers and the legal profession and was elected as a Treasurer, Joint Secretary, and Member Executive Committee of the Supreme Court Bar Association, several times and had also been an office-bearer in several national and international voluntary organization including Asia Pacific Lawyers' Association and other philanthropic organizations.
Appointed a Judge of the Patna High Court in the State of Bihar on 16th March, 1994 but soon thereafter transferred to the High Court of Rajasthan. As a Judge in the Rajasthan High Court, held several important assignments as Company Judge, Judge for Arbitration matters, Constitutional matters and also appointed and continued as Chairman of the Advisory Board constituted under the National Security Act. Chaired as a member of the Selection Committee constituted for appointment of Civil Judge Junior and Senior Division. Later appointed Executive Chairman of the Rajasthan State Legal Services Authority.
Invited to participate in the South Asian Conference on invitation of the UNICEF held at Kathmandu (Nepal) on the subject of "Ending Violence against the Women and Children". In 1998 represented India, as a Guest Speaker, in the Conference of the International Association of Women Judges held at Ottawa in Canada. Elevated as Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court at Ranchi on 13th July, 2008.
Assumed the charge of the office of Judge, Supreme Court of India on 30th April, 2010.
